Cricket Derbyshire has launched its 2014 Academy programme in partnership with the University of Derby.

The intake includes seven returning Academy Members who will have the opportunity to work with the dedicated Academy and first team coaching staff as they continue their developments with the Club.

The selected players will spend the winter working on their skills and taking lifestyle advice before embarking on a summer of cricket under the Cricket Derbyshire Academy in partnership with the University of Derby banner.

The continuing partnership with the University of Derby, including the sponsorship of the county’s LV= County Championship shirt, will see Cricket Derbyshire once again support the University of Derby’s Team Derby cricket team as part of the first University/Academy cricket partnership in the country.

The Club is dedicated in producing local home-grown talent and five graduates – Tom Poynton, Ben Slater, Matt Higginbottom, Alex Hughes and Peter Burgoyne – played vital roles as Derbyshire claimed their first top flight victory for over a decade during a historic 2013 campaign.

In total, eight Cricket Derbyshire Academy in partnership with University of Derby graduates featured for Head Coach Karl Krikken’s side in 2013 both in the four-day and limited over sides.

The Club has also announced that Academy graduates Ben Cotton, Greg Cork, Jonathan Marsden and Tom Taylor have been awarded summer contracts for 2014 which will allow them to continue their progressions alongside the senior side.

Academy member Harvey Hosein is currently part of the ECB’s prestigious England Development Programme at under-17’s level, whilst former Academy duo Danielle Wyatt and Georgia Elwiss both played their parts in this summer’s Women’s Ashes triumph.

Head of Development Howard Dytham said: “If you are going to have an articulated vision of producing your own players then realistically you are only as strong as the Academy.

“We try and make sure the players are taught regularly to replicate what is required at a first-class level and trying to get those messages across early so they can, hopefully, have a smooth transition through to the senior side.

“We think we have got the right people this year. I think with a lower intake it will help us concentrate a dedicated coaching schedule giving them the best opportunity for success.

“We’re very lucky to have such a committed and experienced coaching team, which includes contracted hours from members of the professional squad.

“It’s fantastic that a number of former Academy graduates have earned summer contracts with the Club, further demonstrating the dedication to produce local talent and we look forward to another successful summer with the Academy in 2014."
