Women's Winter World Cup!!

Women’s Winter World Cup!!!

Over the last 5 weeks the Derbyshire Cricket Board has ran an indoor softball competition at Willows Sports Centre. Last Sunday was the final week of fixtures. A double round robin format meant each team was to play 10 games each. After the first 4 weeks all teams have played 8 matches and the league was very finely poised before the last week. South Derbyshire and Belper Meadows were joint top of the league with 21 points! Closely behind was Ilkeston Rutland, who were sat on 18 points, just behind the 2 leaders. The first fixture of the day on court 3 was a huge top of the table clash! Belper Meadows prevailed in a high quality game against South Derbyshire (302 – 252) to pull 3 points clear at the top of the table. Over on court 2 Ilkeston lost a very tight and high scoring game against Duffield (313 – 295).

Going into the final round of fixtures South Derbyshire had to beat Belper Amateurs in order to put pressure on Meadows to win their final game. However,Amateurs were not going to go down without a fight and fought back late in the game to win (274 – 262). This result meant Meadows were 3 points clear at the top with a game in hand and were the champions elect. The last match on court 2 was a classic, which came down to the last over. Ilkeston, hoping to finish 2nd, bowled first and were chasing Meadows’ score of 250. They fell just 7 runs short in the final over which meant Belper Meadows were the winners, finishing with an impressive 27 points out of a possible 30!!

Three teams had an opportunity to win the competition on the final week however the competition was very closely contested throughout, with all teams looking like beating everyone else. Results were never certain and this shows how good the standard was as well as how much everyone improved over the 5 weeks. This competition has seen 6 teams enter, registering over 70 players to take part has been a great opportunity for women who participated in our summer softball offer to further showcase their skills as well as prepare for the coming season. The indoor format was new to many of the players but they have adapted their skills very impressively over the 5 weeks. It has been a very exciting and enjoyable competition!

What has been great to see is the amount of support each team has been bringing with them. It is very encouraging for the women’s game that this competition has been so well supported and shows that the clubs involved are placing some focus on their women and girls sections.

Congatulations Belper Meadows! Good luck in the East Midlands Finals Day on April 27th!

Good look to all the teams going forward into the summer!!
