Derbyshire U15 Girls v Cumbria U15 Girls

Derbyshire U15 Girls (232-5) beat Cumbria U15 Girls (57 All Out)

DCBu15Girls15v18

A glorious May Day welcomed the start of the under 15 girl’s season at the superbly set Wirksworth ground. Our visitors from the north, Cumbria, decided to make the most of seeing the sun and opted to field first. Derbyshire started positively with Lara Shaw (19) and Katie Januszewska (22) in particular playing some powerful shots. Derbyshire  quickly  moved to 55-2 before , Alice Harwood (55), on her home ground came to the crease, later she was joined by  Suzie Ljubojevic (61*)  and they  put on a superb 93 for the 5th wicket. Both scored Maiden County 50’s and it was a delight for the crowd to see the potential of both girls being realised with a string of shots around the ground. Derbyshire finished on 233-5 with Grace Fishleigh adding a quick-fire unbeaten 19 at the end.

Chasing 232 was always going to be tough,  but Cumbria’s openers made a bright start putting 44 on before Grace (2-8) struck with the ball as first change bowler. Backed up by some good fielding and accurate bowling from Jess Thatcher and Eden Collier Derbyshire began to stop the Cumbrian progress and then Charlotte Thompson was introduced and claimed a magnificent 3 for 0 with her leg breaks. The captain Keeley Brodrick (1-16) wrapped up the final wicket with Cumbria on 57 and Derbyshire had won by 175 runs. The team spirit from all 12 was excellent and with several players producing hugely improved performances, there are good signs of a successful season ahead.
