Derbyshire Cricket Board Womens 1st XI - Final Weekend Round-Up

With survival on the menu of the 4 teams at the foot of the table the fixtures threw out the mouth-watering prospect of games against each other. Staffs at the foot played Worcs & Wales, Worcs to play Staffs & Derbys, Derbys to play Worcs & Wales and finally Wales to play Staffs & Derbys. It also meant the 4 teams at the top had a similar weekend of fixtures to win promotion.

For Derbys it was simple, one win would probably be enough.

With Sarah Glenn returning from a successful spell with Loughborough Lightening in the KIA Super League hopes were high although an overnight illness delayed her arrival and presented Manager Richard Wood with the dilemma of naming a team without knowing Sarah would be well enough to play. Skipper Charlotte Horton won the toss and Wales were to bat first on a good looking Quarndon track. Leah Kellogg (7-4-9-3) and Amy Lacey (10-2-28-3) opened as Wales tried to assert some pressure but were to be pegged back at 22 for 3, Amy taking the first 2 and Leah 1. Lucy Yates (4-0-21-2) twice left the stumps looking like a hillbilly’s teeth sandwiching a third wicket for Amy as Wales faltered to 50 for 6. Alice Dyson (5-1-17-0) bowled with good pace as Wales tried desperately to stabilise the innings. Despite rallying slightly to 85 for 6 it was Georgie Harrison (5.5-1-18-2) and Leah who were to quickly wrap up the innings in the 32nd over for 99.

A subdued Sarah Glenn opened with Charlotte and soon showed us what we’ve missed all summer. An early barrage of boundaries (4x4s and 3x6s) saw the score race to 41 when Charlotte was dismissed for 4. Rachel Hopkins (6) took the score to 56 for 2 as Sarah’s illness began to take its toll, the scoring slowed noticeably. However with Bess Heath (33*) taking on the mantle of big hitting Sarah eventually fell for 44 having set up the victory platform. Leah (4) was to be run out at 92 for 4 so it was left to Alice and Bess to confirm victory in the 23rd over. Maximum points (18) were in the bag as Wales collected only 2 and with Worcestershire claiming 17 points against Staffs (4) it confirmed Staffs were relegated and meant Derbys needed another 4 points from the final game to guarantee Division 2 cricket in 2018.

Another sunny morning this time in Spondon and another toss won by Charlotte playing in her final county game, Worcestershire were batting. With their own array of Loughborough Lightening KSL players Worcs would be tough opposition. Leah (10-3-30-0)and Amy (10-5-26-3) again took the new ball, bowling tight lines and Amy picking up 2 early wickets, 15 for 2. Georgie Harrison (3-0-17-0) replaced Amy and Lucy (5-2-10-1) on for Leah, Lucy picking up the prized scalp of Thea Brookes with a loosener grabbed behind by keeper Bess, 56 for 3. Lucys afternoon was to end with a back injury after 5 overs. Sarah Glenn (10-1-37-2) and Alice (7-1-16-1) kept the pressure on reducing Worcs to 114-6 and with Amy removing the dangerous skipper Rowles Derbys were into the ‘tail’. Despite a last wicket stand of 19 Rachel Hopkins (5-3-8-2) cleaned up the tailenders, all out for 154 and the full 4 bowling points were secure, survival was in the bag.

Charlotte (0) and Sarah (37) opened but there was to be no last Hurrah! For Charlotte as she fell lbw to the first ball of the innings. Sarah’s response was brutal with another 5x 4s and 2 x 6s she added 51 with an assured looking Tiarna Gilkes. 51 for 1 quickly became 55 for 5 as Tiarna (10), Sarah (37) Leah (0) and Bess (3) all fell in quick succession and with another 100 still required it looked ominous. However, Rachel (14) and Alice (49*) added 20 and with a polished supporting 52 ball stay from Imogen (7) she added a further 33 with Alice taking the score to 108 for 7. Lucy (9) arrived at number 9 despite her back injury and Alice found another willing support whilst playing shots all around the ground. With the score now on 140 Lucy fell and Georgie (7*) joined Alice and the pair took the team home in the 37th over, Alice finishing with an unbeaten stylish and belligerent 49 that included 5x4s and 2x6s. Another maximum haul of 18 points, Worcs collecting 6.

A successful campaign without players really hitting the form we know they are capable of and with notable absences of Sarah Glenn and Emily Marriott a team devoid of a spin attack for much of the season the squad can be rightly pleased with its showing in Division 2. With a young team assembling the future looks promising but with the retirement of Skipper Charlotte Horton a loss of experience will be evident… not too late for a ‘U’ turn Charlotte!! But the thanks and best wishes of everyone go with you.

Wales managed 16 points in their victory over Staffs (5) which was just enough (1 point) to deny Derbys a 5th place finish.
