Hampshire Cricket Board Womens 1st XI v Derbyshire Cricket Board Womens 1st XI

A 150 mile trip to Basingstoke & North Hants CC provided an eagerly awaited encounter with Hampshire who could now boast former England Captain Charlotte Edwards and current New Zealand Captain Suzie Bates amongst their ranks.

Losing the toss Derbyshire were asked to bat first in conditions set to suit the bowlers. A batting line up again without Sarah Glenn and also Emily Marriott would have its resilience tested in overcast conditions. Openers Horton and Hopkins took a cautious approach despite both hitting early boundaries but with the ball moving late Hopkins (5) was drawn into the drive and fell to a catch at cover. Megan Pittman joined Horton (12) but a visibly frustrated Horton was adjudged to have nicked off having hit her pad and an eager umpire raised the finger, 28 for 2. Bess Heath (0) soon fell as did Megan (7), Leah Kellogg (2), Rebekah Grimley (1) and Tiarna Gilkes (0) and at 44 for 7 and the ball still moving around Derbyshire were in deep trouble. Alice Dyson (18) and Lucy Yates (14) restored a little hope before Yates became the first of Suzie Bates two victims. Emma Thatcher (14) and Alice took the score to 86 before the latter fell. Amy Lacey (3 not out) and Emma brought up the 100 but Bates ended the innings at 109.

Leah Kellogg (4-1-18-0) and Alice Dyson (6-2-10-0) took the new ball to Edwards and Dean but despite there still being a little movement couldn’t force the breakthrough. An unhelpful short shower sent the players racing for cover before Lucy Yates (4-0-24-1) and Amy Lacey (4-0-24-0) resumed the attack. Yates it was who finally got through having Dean smartly caught behind by Megan with the score at 41 after 12 overs. Bates joined Edwards and the pair showed their class despite a scare for Bates being dropped on 0 the pair batted aggressively. Rachel Hopkins (5-0-20-0) and Emma Thatcher (2.2-0-16-0) trying their arm couldn’t add to the points total as Edwards 37* and Bates 43* completed the lesson inside 26 overs. Hampshire taking a full 18 points and Derbys 2.
