Mini Academy - A season to
remember
Derbyshire Cricket
Board's Mini Academy finished their season on Friday 2nd September with
another victory, this time against Staffs.
It has been an excellent season
all round since the decision was made for them to play more games as the
'Mini Academy' and miss most of their junior club cricket that was not
always testing them in the best way.
It was way back on
April 15th, the first game, when the Mini Academy last lost a match. Since
then they have won 8 games and drawn one, and even then Durham were 'hanging
on' nine wickets down in the 2 day game. This includes victories against the
Midlands U15s (twice), Staffs EPP (twice), and Cheshire as well as other
opponents.
The decision to
organise a proper programme of matches for the Mini Academy this season
instead of
playing so much junior club cricket has paid off it would seem
from the results of both the team and of individuals involved. Mini Academy
Head Coach, Howard Dytham said "The lads responded well this season to the
decision to take them out of their comfort zones more often and make them
play against better opposition more often - that is the best way to test
them and make them work harder for any success. We have also seen lots of
important individual developments from the programme as well - players being
selected for the EDP (England Development Programme) U16 group, players
making it into the Midlands U15 team, a 13 year old playing Premier League
cricket as well as bowling regularly in our County U17 side and all players
making significant contributions to their senior club sides and to their
county age groups."
The players will soon
be looking forward to a well-earned rest before the selection process for
next year's programme starts in early October.

Repton Camp Weekend Report
On
the 15th April the Mini Academy arrived at Repton School to begin
a training camp weekend.
We
began training at 10.30am due to traffic problems caused by roadworks which
meant that most of us were late arriving. Training consisted of fielding
drills, catching practice and ground work skills. At 1pm we broke for lunch,
after lunch we had a theory session before warming up for our 20-20 match
against Repton. Unfortunately we lost this match but came away having
learned valuable lessons about field placing and bowling in the correct
areas, we left Repton after having a de-brief followed by much appreciated
sandwiches and cakes!
On
Saturday we arrived back at Repton for 9am armed with tents and sleeping
bags as we were camping out at Ticknall that night. First thing on Saturday
we had a training session where we practised batting outside on a grass
wicket, followed by a running test. After lunch we set out to walked to
Ticknall with Jess and Sophie on a Geo Cache trail, this took us up to about
5.15pm.
On
arrival at Ticknall we enjoyed watching the Manchester City v Manchester
United derby on television, followed by a lovely tea provided by Jess and
Sophie. After tea we were faced with the task of erecting the tents, which
for most of us was easier said than done! When the tents were finally up we
had a quiz and then we retired for the night about 10.30pm, although I think
it was more like midnight when we got to sleep!
Morning came all too quickly when we were woken up at 6am and had breakfast
followed by the task of taking down the tents- they came down much easier
than they went up! We left Ticknall at 7.15am to walk back to Repton which
took us to about 8.45.
On
arrival at Repton we had a quick shower and then it was into the Coaches
seminar where we were put though our paces by the coaches from all around
the area. I had a session with Mike Hendrick which I found really useful in
sorting out a problem I had with my run-up. We then had tea which we had
brought with us from home, then it was on to the warm-up for the 45 over
match against Staffs which started around 1pm. We won this match, and
afterwards we had a reflection session.
We
all really enjoyed the weekend although it was tiring and hard work. I think
we learned really valuable lessons about working as a team and also we
learned things about ourselves, such as how we learn best and how we react
to different training methods.
