Match Reports Girls U13

DCB U13 Girls v Lancashire Sunday 2nd June 2013 at Hayfield CC

Result: Derbyshire 97/8 in 30 overs (Olivia Fletcher 3-18, Paige Beresford 3-5) beat Lancashire 96 all out in 24.3 overs (Eleanor Cheatle 54) by 2 Wickets

On Sunday 2nd June Derbyshire U13 girls met Lancashire at the very sunny picturesque Hayfield CC after a disappointing result against Yorkshirein early May. Lancashire have been the national U13 champions for the last two seasons so the Derbyshire girls needed to improve significantly if they were going to have a positive result.

Captain Holly Bacon won the toss and decided to bowl first. Ashleigh Keable and Mariam Iman opened the bowling and bowled steadily without taking a wicket. Venetia Mair and leg spinner Olivia Fletcher were then brought on with the latter changing the course of the game. Olivia Fletcher picked up three wickets all bowled deceiving the Lancashire top order with her flight and spin. VenetiaMair also picked up the somewhat fortuitous wicket of the captain Lucy Staunton-Turner for 36 with a full toss a good catch by Paige Beresford at deep square leg.

Unfortunately Olivia Fletcher had to come off before her spell had finished because she had bowled three no balls for height even though the ruling is the balls have to be deemed threatening! This though did not take the smile off her face. Paige Beresford and Eleanor Cheatle finished the game off with Paige Beresford picking up three quick wickets and Eleanor Cheatle one. Paige Beresford in particular bowling with good pace and swing down the slope.

Lancashire finished on 96 all out with Venetia Mair 5 overs for 15 runs with 1 wicket, Olivia Fletcher 4.1 overs 1 maiden for 18 runs with 3 wickets, Paige Beresford 2.3 overs for 5 runs with 3 wickets and Eleanor Cheatle 2 overs for 3 runs with 1 wicket. There were also two run outs by Eleanor Cheatle and Lily Lymn. Well done to Olivia Fletcher and Paige Beresford who had their best spellsof bowling for the county.

Eleanor Cheatle and Holly Bacon opened the batting who both immediately looked composed at the crease however Holly Bacon was out in the third over for 2. All the batters supported Eleanor Cheatle in chasing down the 96 runs required with Venetia Mair, Bess Heath, Lauren Nutty and Ashleigh Keable all showing improvements from the Yorkshire innings but not going on to make significant scores. Derbyshire looked like they were going to knock off the 96 runs relatively easily with Eleanor scoring runs freely. However runs started to slow from 25 overs but we eventually pulled the scores level with Ashleigh Keable and Eleanor Cheatle at the crease. To add further drama to the game Eleanor Cheatle was then bowled by the impressive Rebecca Duckworth and Ashleigh Keable was also bowled with the scores still level. This then brought Lily Lymn and Paige Beresford together and the Lancashire captain sensibly brought the field in tight on the one. Those who have watched the Derbyshire U13 girls for the last two years know that Lily is very quick between the wickets but her running at times can be a little frenetic!! With this in mind and Lily on strike she hit the ball straight to a very close cover and called yes. The ball was quickly thrown to the Lancashire wicket keeper who proceeded to take the bails off but they didn’t come out of their grove and as the wicket keeper then looked at the stumps a diving Paige Beresford made her ground and Derbyshire won the game.

This was a much improved batting performance with the innings anchored by Eleanor Cheatle who scored an impressive 54 off 62 balls with 6 4s.
