DCB U11 Girls End of Season Report 2014

Derbyshire 39 all out in 18.2 overs lost to Northants 40/6 in 25.3 overs (Suzie Ljubojevic 3-8) by 4 wickets
Shropshire – cancelled
Derbyshire 61/3 in 30 overs lost to Warwickshire 62/7 in 23.4 overs by 3 wickets
Lancashire 60/5 in 18 overs beat Derbyshire 52/3 in 18 overs by 8 runs

Second season for this age group and, coming off the back of an autumn and winter programme in which the effort, spirit and steadily improving performances of the players had impressed all of the coaches involved, everyone was looking forward to the matches.
In fact, the improvements in every aspect of the game continued through the summer: batters started to prize their wickets more, from being bowled out in 18 overs for 39 in the first match against Northamptonshire (even though it took Northants nearly 26 overs to win), to scoring 65 for 7 and 52 for 3 in a very tight 18 overs double-header with Yorkshire and Lancashire in August; bowlers have kept things tight, gifting fewer bowling Extras than the opposition in most matches and sharing the wickets between them; and confidence in the field has really grown, with a number of direct run outs and catches to go with the increased awareness and commitment.
The potential high spot of the season became the biggest disappointment. Playing Staffordshire away with rain forecast, the match was reduced to 25 overs a side. Having scored 87 for 2, we smelled victory when we had Staffs 59 for 5 with only five overs and, according to their coach, not much batting left. Then the rain arrived to spoil things.
There have been many good individual performances, but there's only space here to mention the new captain, Annelise Rountree, and new wicket keeper, Katie Januszewska, both of whom have done consistently well and grown into their roles.
Once again it's been a great pleasure for Amy and me to work with the girls, so thanks go to them and their families for all of their efforts.

A new age group for this season-for most players, their first opportunity to play something other than the pairs format and for many their first hardball cricket-players, parents, coach and I all had a lot to learn!

Travel, a 1½ hour warm-up, followed by 30 overs a side is a daunting prospect for young cricketers, but over the course of the season they have shown an increasing capacity to focus on the cricket.

The season started with a good, two-run victory at home against Shropshire and in the return match were ached 84 for 6 in our 30 overs(captain Lucy Yates, 37 and Holly Maycock, 21 not out) before the drizzle turned to rain during tea and the match was abandoned.

The next games were played on two of the summer’s hottest days. At Wirksworth, we set Staffordshire only 44 to win, which they managed with 8 overs spare. At Moseley Ashfield, Warwickshire raced to 69 for 1 in ten overs and despite being bowled out in the 26th over (Lucy Yates 4-12), 140 was too many for us to chase.

It was six weeks before our final match: Warwickshire at Ticknall. We managed 62 for 6, but defending a small total after a long lay-off proved too much and Warwickshire romped to victory for the loss of only two wickets.

We’ve all improved in some aspects this summer and I’m sure the experience will enable us to get even more out of the autumn and winter programme.
