U15 Girls finish their season on a high

The fixtures have come to a close for the girls U15 squad the girls have signed off with two excellent victories against Northants, home and away.

The first of the two games was at Ticknall on Tuesday, Northants won the toss and put Derbyshire in to bat on an excellent wicket, they may have regretted this decision when Derbyshire’s first wicket stand produced 101 before Nina Smedley was out for 41, her partner Sarah Glenn (11 years old) saw two quick wickets fall before Holly Robinson came to the crease. Sarah carried on scoring 81 in a 4th wicket partnership of 99 with Holly who finished the innings on 53 and the teams total was an excellent 226 for 5.

In their reply Northants lost early wickets to Jenny Peel (pictured left) and Jess Bakewell (pictured right), and this put pressure on their early batters as they struggled to keep up with the run rate required. Jo Gardner batted from the 2nd over for Northants to end up 58 not out. The bowlers restricted their opposition to 123 for 6 to give them a 113 run victory. After the opening bowlers had taken 1 wicket each the other bowlers Georgia Ball, Holly Beresford, Beth Harwood and Jemma Ficken also took 1 wicket each. The bowlers were supported by an excellent fielding effort by the team.

The next match against Northants 2 days later at Wellingborough Town saw Northants win the toss and again put Derbyshire into bat. The two openers Nina and Sarah put a 50 opening stand together before Sarah was dismissed for 14, a couple of wickets fell before the in form Holly Robinson came to the crease, together with Nina they put a 71 partnership on before Nina went for 68. Northants Odell bowling leg spin took 5 wickets and put the brakes on the run scoring, Holly was well helped by the late order batsmen, batting through to the end of the innings for 43 not out and the teams total was 181 for 8.

The bowlers soon took wickets in the Northants innings, Jenny Peel’s opening spell saw her take 3 for 7 in 4 overs, Jess Bakewell frequently went past the outside edge and was unlucky not to take a wicket, Beth Harwood who captains the U13s team came on first change and found some steep bounce out of the track took 2 for 9, skipper Holly Beresford took 1 for 14 off her 7 overs.  Jemma Ficken’s left arm over soon saw Northants 9 wickets down taking 2 quick wickets, this just left Sarah Glenn to take the last wicket and see Northants dismissed for 71, leaving the winning margin at 111 runs. The fielding was as good if not better than 2 days previous keeper Rebekah Grimley had 3 dismissals and a run out to Jemma Ficken rounded up 2 excellent performances.
