Derbyshire U13 Girls Season Review
Having won the East Midland U13 division last year and seven of the girls
still eligible again this season expectations were high at the start of the
season.
On the 8th May Derbyshire U13 girls played their first game of
the season versus Northants U13s at the picturesque Elvaston CC. Derbyshire
batted first and made 164 for 4. This included a third wicket partnership of
111 between Elinor Canham (on her debut) and Sarah Glenn. Sarah Glenn
finished on a magnificent 109 not out with 12 fours. Derbyshire then bowled
Northants out for 70 with first county wickets for Georgie Harrison, Abigail
Hall and Isabelle Pridmore and Eleanor Cheatle performing well behind the
stumps in her first game at wicketkeeper.
The following Sunday Derbyshire were away to Leicestershire at Queniborough
CC. Derbyshire lost the toss and were put into bat. Unfortunately Derbyshire
did not continue their form with the bat and with some poor shot selection
and disciplined bowling were bowled out for 49. Leicestershire then knocked
this off relatively comfortably for the loss of 3 wickets with Miranda
Marshall 1 for 7 and Georgie Harrison 1 for 8 bowling well.
After the previous weeks below par performance the girls were determined to
improve and did so in style against Warwickshire. Beth Harwood won the toss
and decided to bowl at a very windy Grif and Coton CC. Two excellent opening
spells of bowling from Beth Harwood and Miranda Marshall set the tone with
Miranda bowling with real pace with the wind behind her. Warwickshire were
eventually bowled out for 64 with two run outs from Beth Harwood and Laura
Dexter on her debut and some excellent bowling from Miranda Marshall 3 for
7, Abigail Hall 2 for 6, Alice Dyson 2 for 1 and Georgie Harrison 1 for 5.
Derbyshire then knocked off 64 for the loss of 2 wickets with Sarah Glenn 41
not out and Eleanor Cheatle batting through for 13 not out.
The girls then had a month break until the next game Notts at Worksop on the
26th June. Derbyshire won the toss and decided to bat and at 26
for 4 this was not looking a good decision but a 60 run partnership between
Abigail Hall (38) and Megan Pitman (24) steadied the innings. The lower
order of Alice Dyson, Beth Harwood and Miranda Marshall then proceeded to
add 30 valuable runs which meant Derbyshire finally finished on 124. Notts
started their innings very quickly with too many extras bowled but clever
spells of bowling from Alice Dyson 2 for 15 and Georgie Harrison 2 for 7
reduced the Notts run rate and 2 excellent run outs from Eleanor Cheatle and
Laura Dexter knocked the stuffing out of the Nott’s response. Beth Harwood
then brought herself back on taking 2 wickets to bowl Notts out for 108.
The following Sunday was Leicestershire at Wirksworth and Middleton CC and
unbeknown to many of the girls was 1st versus 2nd.
Derbyshire lost the toss and were asked to bowl. Leicestershire started
their innings extremely positively and after 6 overs were 43 for 1. Then
came a match changing moment when Taggy McGhee on her debut ran out Esther
Stock who had made 30 very quickly. Then some excellent spells of bowling
from Abigail Hall 2 for 7, Sarah Glenn 2 for 14, Alice Dyson 2 for 10 and
Georgie Harrison 2 for 6 finished the Leicestershire innings for 103 all
out. Derbyshire’s reply was mixed with Eleanor Cheatle again looking
accomplished but at 30 for 3 Derbyshire looked in trouble. But a 35 run
partnership between Abigail Hall and Megan Pitman (34) brought the game back
into Derbyshire’s favour. However, the loss of 3 quick wickets meant
Derbyshire were again struggling. At 83 for 9 Beth Harwood and Isabelle
Pridmore then produced a very mature last wicket stand and they took the
score to 98 and Beth then hit a 4 and a single to make the scores level.
Leicestershire then took the final wicket of the game to make the scores
tied. This was an excellent game of cricket which ebbed and flowed with a
tie probably being a fair result.
The penultimate game of the season was against Warwickshire at Elvaston CC.
Derbyshire lost the toss and were put into bat Eleanor Cheatle (19) and
Sarah Glenn then produced a wonderful opening partnership of 79. Derbyshire
again lost 3 quick wickets but Alice Dyson (13*) supported Sarah Glenn who
finished on 72 not out and Derbyshire finished on 120 for 5. The
Warwickshire innings then started extremely quickly with too many 4 balls
and far too many extras. Good spells of bowling from Alice Dyson 2 for 8,
Abigail Hall 1 for 11 and Isabelle Pridmore 1 for 8 slowed the Warwickshire
run rate but Warwickshire eventually knocked the runs off in 27.2 overs. A
disappointing performance but it was always going to be difficult to win
with 53 extras!
The final game of
the season was Notts at Denby CC with the girls needing to bounce back from
a disappointing performance the week before. Derbyshire lost the toss and
Notts chose to bat. Rain stopped play after 1 over but play shortly resumed
and once Georgie Harrison had removed the Notts captain for 26 there were
wickets at regular intervals and 2 excellent run outs from Abbey Hall and
Georgie Harrison and some great fielding notably 3 catches for Georgie
Harrison saw Notts all out for 77. There were some excellent spells of
bowling from Alice Dyson 2 for 11, Beth Harwood 1 for 7, Georgie Harrison 2
for 12, Isabelle Pridmore 1 for 9 and Sarah Glenn 2 for 12. The Derbyshire
openers Eleanor Cheatle (7*) and Sarah Glenn (30*) again batted well
together and took the score to 44 for 0 after 13 overs when the teams came
off for rain and the match was abandoned. Another 2 overs and Derbyshire
would have won on run rate. It was fitting that with the rain apart this was
probably Derbyshire’s best all round performance of the season.
An excellent
effort over the season saw the girls finish second in the league.
A special mention must go to Beth Harwood for captaining the side, Andrew
Dyson for his outstanding job as manager, Mike Harwood for scoring and
Elvaston CC, Wirksworth and Middleton CC and Denby CC for hosting games and
making us feel extremely welcome. Overall this was an excellent season with
all players making significant contributions and continually improving game
on game. The girls can now look forward to next season after a winter of
hard work and fun with 7 players of the squad still eligible and Alice
Dyson, Eleanor Cheatle, Sarah Glenn and Megan Pitman playing in their 3rd
season of U13 county cricket. Good luck to those players who move into the
U15 squad.

Disappointing end to U13 Girls home game
Derbyshire
played Warwickshire at the lovely Elvaston Castle ground on Sunday. Despite
losing the toss, we were happy to bat on a good wicket and fast outfield.
Sarah Glenn and Eleanor Cheatle opened the innings and gave Derbyshire a
solid start with 32 scored off the first 10 overs against some good bowling
and tight fielding. Eleanor used her feet well against the spinners, with
some good shots and Sarah played her normal attacking style to good
effect. After 20 overs we had reached 80 for 0. Shortly after drinks Eleanor
was out for a well made 19, and as happens in many cricket matches we lost a
further 3 quick wickets, Laura, Elinor and Abigail the unlucky ones. Alice
Dyson joined Sarah and batted well, scoring a quick 13 with some good sweeps
against the spinners. Derbyshire finished on 120 with 5 wickets down.
The highlight of the Derbyshire innings was once again Sarah Glenn scroing a
very well made 72 not out. In two county games at Elvaston this season Sarah
has now scored 181 not out - a wonderful achievement !
Warwickshire innings started quickly, reaching 40 in a few overs, mainly
down to mixed bowling and fielding. Beth Harwood changed the bowling around
several times to good effect, supported by better fielding. Warwicks were
always just ahead of the required rate with wickets in hand. Taggy McGhee as
last week made a great contribution by taking a good catch to get their top
scorer out. With 5 overs to go, it was still reasonably tight, however,
Warwicks had a good over and won the game by 4 wickets with 2 overs to go.
Highlights for the bowlers were Abigail Hall and Isable Pridmore were 4
overs, 1 wicket each for only a few runs. Georgie Harrison again took 2
wickets, and Alice had 5 overs, 2 for 8.
A disappointing end to the game, where the girls realised they had made it
easier for Warwickshire with the number of extras conceded, however, to be
reasonably close at the end shows it was a very mixed performance.
This week we host Notts at Denby hoping to end the season with a good all
round performance.

Exciting Match ends in a tie for U13 Girls
DCB Girls U13
played Leicester on Sunday at a sunny Wirksworth, hoping to have a better
result than earlier in the season when they were comprehensively beaten.
On losing the toss Derbyshire were asked to bowl and Miranda Marshall
cleaned bowled the opening batter in the first over for a great start.
However, after 6 over Leicester were 43 f 1 with a mixture of good batting
and average fielding by Derbyshire. Sarah Glenn and Abigail Hall then bowled
well together with Derbyshire waking up in the field and this put a stop on
the scoring rate.
Taggy McGhee on her debut produced a great stop in the field and throw to
run out Leicestershire's star player who had already made 30 runs quickly.
Derbyshire continued to bowl and field well and Leicester were all out for
103 with Abigail, Georgie Harrison and Alice Dyson all taking 2 wickets off
5 overs for not many runs each.
Derbyshire's reply got off to a mixed start, with Eleanor Cheatle a steady
11 and Sarah a quick 7 ( with one large 6 ). At 30 f 3 Megan Pittman and
Abigail produced another good partnership taking the score to 63 f 3 with
good running between the wickets and a few boundaries.
Following a run out, Derbyshire lost quick wickets, despite Miranda batting
well and Megan finishing with a very good 34 which was a mixture of good
defensive shots and runs all round the wicket.
At 83 f 9, needing 21 to win for the last wicket, captain Beth Harwood and
Isabelle Pridmore produced a wonderful last wicket stand with many quick run
singles. They took the score to 98 and when Beth smashed a 4 and took a
single next ball the scores were tied. Leicester then took the last wicket
and a fair result for an exciting game of cricket between two good sides
ended in a tie.

Win for Derbyshire U13 Girls over Notts
Beth Harwood won the
toss for the first time this season on a very hot day at Worksop CC against
a strong Notts team. Her team mates were pleased we decided to bat, however,
Notts bowled really well and reduced Derbyshire to 26 for 4, however, Laura
Dexter was unlucky. Abbey Hall (38) and Megan Pittman (24) then put on a 60
partnership. Both batted very sensibly with Megan playing some good
defensive shots, this being against her natural instinct to attack. They
built a good partnership with Abbey playing some wonderful shots through the
covers. The lower order of Alice Dyson, Beth Harwood and Miranda Marshall
then batted well, looking for 1 and 2's on a large ground, running between
the wickets well and added 30 valuable runs between them in the last few
overs.
Notts got off to a very quick start, which was more down to Derbyshire
giving away too many extras combined with some poor fielding. After 10 overs,
Notts were well on top and Sally's team talk worked wonders in waking the
girls up. The girls for the next 20 overs fielded as though they wanted to
win the game resulting in two direct runs outs from Eleanor Cheatle and
Laura Dexter. The bowling improved, but still a few too many extras were
given away. The game continued to swing both ways and with 4 overs left
Notts needed just over 20 runs with three wickets left and two batters set.
Beth (2-20) took a great wicket and then Alice (2-15) bowled a very good
over with Laura taking a good running catch to win the match. Georgie
Harrison took 2-7. Notts finished on 108 all out with most of the Derbyshire
bowlers taking wickets.
Well done girls, three good wins out of four.

Second win of the season for U13 Girls!
Having
lost the toss 3 weeks running Derbyshire took the field at a very windy Grif
& Coton CC. The wind was such that made bowling into the windy very tricky.
Miranda
Marshall and Beth Harwood produced a great opening spell to put Derbyshire
on top, Miranda clean bowling the two openers early on.
After last weeks below par fielding display, the girls were determined to
improve this week, and they certainly did. Good encouragement and attacking
fielding resulted in 2 runs outs, one by Laura Dexter a direct hit from the
boundary reward for her all round fielding display on her debut.
Derbyshire continued to bowl and field well, restricting Warwickshire to 64
all out. There were excellent bowling figures all round Miranda Marshall 6
overs 3 wickets for 7 runs, Abigail Hall 2 for 5 off 6 overs, Alice Dyson 2
for 1 missing out on the hat trick ball and Georgie Harrison 1 for 5.
Warwickshire two opening bowlers were very accurate restricting Derbyshire
to 9 for 2 after 8 overs. Megan Pittman found the fielders with several good
shots.

Sarah Glenn then decided to finish the match in a hurry, hitting 41 off 21
balls with 9 fours all around the ground, whilst Eleanor Cheatle played well
at the other end batting through the innings. Derbyshire won by 8 wickets.
Overall a good start to the season with 2 wins out of 3.
